What is the 1662 Service? The 1662 Service is a traditional form of worship reaching back to.... 1662! It is from the Book of Common Prayer (often shortened to BCP). The words have been updated in 1922 but remain, essentially, those authorised for use in church by King Charles II. It is a eucharist service, meaning that the congregation shares in the Lord's Supper of Bread and Wine representing Christ's Body and Blood. Why do we use such an old service? The BCP is essentially still the only "official" prayer book for use within the Anglican communion, despite a number of alternatives - they remain just that, alternatives. Many people like the stateliness and tradition inherent in this form of liturgy, it also serves as a useful reminder of those who have passed before us in worship of Christ in Stevington. What does it look like? A facsimile of the book may be found here, however, the BCP is a "cum privilegio" publication and remains in Crown Copyright in perpetuity, so we are unable to host it here.
